Personal Demons - How to Seal Your Inner Demons in a Card Puzzle

Summon monsters, create magical seals, and find a way to face your own fears.

What Lies Behind the Ritual in Personal Demons?

Personal Demons is a card-based board game from Tettix Games, designed by Judson Cowan. This spatial card puzzle has players summon fantastical creatures, create seals, and try to overcome their own demons. The game supports solo play and games for 2-4 players, with sessions lasting 30-60 minutes.

Tettix Games is also known for Deep Regrets and Hideous Abomination. In Personal Demons, grotesque monsters embody inner fears and struggles, while the summoning ritual becomes a metaphor for confronting them.

The art combines unsettling imagery with unexpected humor. The demons are bizarre and sometimes amusing, so the game is more than a dark tale of fighting evil. Beneath the supernatural conflict lies a familiar experience: sometimes, moving forward means facing what you would rather avoid.

How Does Summoning Demons Become a Struggle for Control?

In Personal Demons, each player has their own summoning circle, which gradually fills with creatures from another realm. Colored symbols in the corners of the cards link the demons together. When four corner symbols of the same color come together, they form a seal that scores points for the cards it touches.

Seals, however, do not retain their full power forever. After scoring, they crack and stop scoring points until the corresponding combination can be restored. Even cracked seals still matter, helping players meet the requirements for later summons. Each completed ritual becomes the starting point for the next.

Hefty and Colossal demons have a special place in the game. These massive creatures are placed over cards already in play and can completely change the layout of the summoning circle. Calling them forth requires accumulated Sins and suitable seals, so players need to prepare in advance.

The arrival of a large demon can disrupt existing combinations, but it can also open up new possibilities. Players must decide whether to preserve the current arrangement or take a risk in pursuit of a more powerful creature. A small gain now may stand in the way of a bigger one later, while a well-timed summon can change the course of the struggle.

How Do Fear, Sins, and Bravery Shape the Ritual?

In Personal Demons, every summoning circle begins with an unwelcome guest: Fear. Its card takes up space that could otherwise hold another creature and makes it harder to create seals. However, Fear does not have to be removed at the first opportunity. Players choose when they are ready to confront it, and having the right seals can make that decision more rewarding.

This creates an unusual choice. Players can clear the space for new demons as soon as possible or let Fear remain until their summoning circle is better prepared. The obstacle continues to limit their options, but waiting for the right moment can lead to a greater reward.

Sins open up other paths. They accumulate as demons are summoned and can be used for bonus actions, drawing additional cards, or calling forth more powerful creatures. Sometimes it is better to spend this resource right away. At other times, holding on to it can help prepare for a much stronger move.

Bravery cards grant players special abilities and help them find their own approach to the ritual. They can open up new ways to create seals or change how points are earned. As the game progresses, players gain more options for overcoming difficulties and making the most of the situation.

Powerful demons also bring special effects that influence the other players. A summon in someone else's circle can therefore disrupt everyone else's plans. In Personal Demons, victory depends not only on building your own path to success but also on being ready for unexpected changes.
